Why Christians Should Stand With Israel

Posted: November 21, 2012 in Uncategorized

A few days ago, I read a news story about Kim Kardashian tweeting that she was “praying for everyone in Israel.”  Now I don’t know much about Kim or if she even understood what she was saying but what amazed me was that in a matter of minutes she received so much backlash, name calling, even death threats that she ended up apologizing for the tweet and taking it down.  How sad that so many people stand so adamantly opposed to Israel.

What I have found as I’ve talked to believers about our need to support Israel is that there are those who shout “Amen!  Preach it brother!”  Those who believe that it is an ignorant position.  And those who simply want to ask , “Why?  Why should we stand with Israel?”

Let me give you some Biblical reasons why we must stand with Israel.

1.     Israel was a nation chosen and established by God Himself.

All other nations of the world were created as an act of man, but the Bible is clear that Israel was chosen and established as a nation by God.

Genesis 12:1-2a The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.“I will make you into a great nation… (NIV)

Additional passages Genesis 13:14-18, 15:1-21, 17:4-8, 22:15-18, 26:1-5 and Psalm 89:28-37

2.  God promises a special blessing to people or nations who bless Israel.

Gen 12:3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse;and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you. (NIV)

History has proven this to be true time and again, that the nations that have blessed the Jewish people have had the blessing of God and the nations that have cursed the Jewish people have experienced the curse of God.  There is argument among many as to whether America was established as a Christian nation or not, but one thing is for sure, America has been blessed by God and I think one of the major reasons is that this nation has stood firmly with Israel.  Pray that this will continue!

3.  Israel is a unique and special people to God.

Deuteronomy 14:2 “For you are a holy people to the LORD your God, and the LORD has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the people who are on the face of the earth. (NKJV)

Psalm 135:4 For the LORD has chosen Jacob unto himself, and Israel as his peculiar treasure. (KJV)

4.  God has made declarations about the land of Israel that have never been rescinded.

There are many such promises in scripture but I believe one of the most powerful comes from Amos 9:14-15 Where God says, “Also I will restore the captivity of My people Israel,
And they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them;
They will also plant vineyards and drink their wine,
And make gardens and eat their fruit.“I will also plant them on their land,
And they will not again be rooted out from their land
 which I have given them.  ”
Says the Lord your God.

Make no mistake about it, God himself has declared that Israel was to be planted in their land never again to be rooted out of it.  And notice it says God is the one who has given them this land!

5.  Because we owe the Jewish people a debt for what we have received through them.

Romans 9:4-5 says that to the Israelites “pertain the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of God and the promises, of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh Christ came who is over all, the eternally blessed God.  (NKJV)

The adoption:  God chose the seed of Abraham to adopt as His own special people.

The glory: Israel experienced the manifest presence of God as He revealed Himself through them.

The covenants:  The covenants God made with them through Abraham, Moses, and the New Covenant.

Jesus Christ:  The greatest gift came through Jesus-a Jew.  Even Jesus himself declared “Salvation is of the Jews.”

6.  We are commanded to pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

Psalm 122:6 “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.  They shall prosper that love thee.”  (KJV)

7.   Christians have a common destiny with Israel.

We long for the promise to be fulfilled of the return of King Jesus to rule from the throne of David in Jerusalem in the Messianic kingdom.  If we truly believe the Bible that this will happen, then we must stand with Israel and believe in her future good.

Zechariah 14:16-19 And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. And it shall be that whichever of the families of the earth do not come up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, on them there will be no rain.  If the family of Egypt will not come up and enter in, they shall have no rain; they shall receive the plague with which the Lord strikes the nations who do not come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. This shall be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not come up to keep the Feast of Tabernacles. (NKJV)

Micah 4:1-2 Now it shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established on the top of the mountains and shall be exalted above the hills;
 And peoples shall flow to it.Many nations shall come and say, “Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob:  He will teach us His ways and we shall walk in His paths.”
For out of Zion the law shall go forth, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.  (NKJV)

As I was just finishing this blog, I received a breaking news alert that a cease fire has been reached that should stop the bombing in Israel and Gaza.  That’s awesome!  But it does not change our need to pray for and stand with the people of Israel.
